Video: Ode to Becky Quick

Posted by WSF On June - 3 - 2009

Maria Bartiromo was immortalized in song by The Ramones.   Now, from 40 Watt Moon:  “Becky Quick, You’re the coolest chick I know”.    Personally, we prefer the new ode to Becky, but you can be the judge yourself.  The ode to Maria is below.

According to Page SIx, it may have had to do with the public relations guy that they now both share.  Thain recently hired Ken Sunshine to help him repair his now kind of tattered reputation.  And it seems that Maria is also represented by him….

Turns out she and Thain both pay public relations guru Ken Sunshine to represent them, and he apparently helped set up the exclusive. "It's a huge conflict of interest. It's incredible she didn't disclose this over the air, but she thinks she's above it all," one broadcast insider told Page Six. "And she was really kissing Thain's ass during the interview."

West Side Highway billboard sparks war of egos at CNBC?

Posted by WSF On September - 5 - 2008

Are Maria Bartiromo, Donny Deutch and Suze Orman cat fighting to get their pictures on a West Side Highway billboard?  That’s what Page Six tells us, although CNBC is said to have denied it…..

THE top talents at CNBC are battling
over a billboard. A network insider tells us Maria Bartiromo, Suze Orman and
Donny Deutsch "all want their pictures on CNBC’s billboard overlooking the
West Side Highway, and there’s always a lot of fighting and lobbying behind the
scenes over it. They’re like a bunch of prima donnas." A CNBC flack denied
any rivalry and insisted all three have had their mugs featured on the board in
the last year.

That’s what Jonathan Wald, CNBC’s svp for business news calls, her according to a relatively fawning article in the New York Times this weekend entitled "Needing a Star, CNBC Made One".  Burnett just signed a new three year contract with CNBC that will also give her more air time on NBC as a fill-in anchor on "Weekend Today".  Wonder how Wald would describe other on-air women of CNBC like Becky Quick, Michelle Caruso-Cabrera and Melissa Francis — who seem to have taken a back seat to  Maria Bartiromo and  now Erin Burnett.  And we wonder what the other ladies think of all of the attention being lavished on the the network’s "ultimate growth stock".

Seems that at least some of the folks at CNBC aren’t too pleased with the negative publicity and jeers they’re getting surrounding Erin Burnett’s appalling little piece in Men’s Health Magazine entitled "Eight Things That Would Impress Me".  That’s on the one hand.  But on the other hand, it apparently had at least the approval of one misguided CNBC insider before it went to press.  And they like that it’s taken the spotlight off of Maria Bartiromo and the scandalicious rumors of her involvement with former Citigroup exec Todd Thompson and her run in with PETA.  Once Page Six source commented: "For the moment it looks like Maria’s off the hook. Erin’s the problem child now."  They continue:

Sources tell Page Six that Burnett, known
as the "Street Sweetie," has network suits in an uproar over the
narcissistic, money-grubbing feature she penned for Men’s Health, titled
"Eight Things That Would Impress Me" – with bosses worried it could
hurt her and the station’s serious news image.

"This has caused a lot of
hand-wringing at the network," an insider told us, suggesting Burnett comes
off as a trite, gold-digging hussy. "There’s worry she’s damaged her brand.
Everybody’s talking about it and asking, like, ‘Why did you do this?’ Everybody
think it’s a major [bleep]-up.’ "

The Wall Street Journal interviewed Fox Business Network boss Roger Ailes.  The new network debuts on October 15.  He was asked a whole range of questions, from what the new network will look like, how they’ll counter CNBC’s huge 90 million home advantage and who from CNBC he might like to hire.  On the latter, he says that CNBC is overworking Erin Burnett…and at the rate they’re going, she’s gonna age.  At least he hopes so, cuz when she says "I need water", sounds like he’ll be ready…..

WSJ: The Fox Business Network launches on Oct. 15 after two years of speculation and, to use your word, "disinformation." I want to know what will viewers see.

Mr. Ailes: So do I. We’re working on it… . We think economic news is probably broader than what CNBC has been presenting. We intend to cover the markets and cover Wall Street as effectively as they do, maybe more, and add additional value. Beyond that, there’s no sense in me talking about it because this is a launch, and it’s a competitive launch….I will call a lot of audibles at the line once the play starts. I will not stand around the sidelines with a gamebook and a set of plays that I’ll stick to. I’ll change many things in the first year, I’m sure.

According to Page Six, while the CNBC and the world seem to fawn over so called "Money Honey" Maria Bartiromo and rising star "Street Sweetie" Erin Burnett (who seems to now be overshadowing her), the other femmes of CNBC aren’t so happy.  Why?  CNBC is said to be lavishing MB and EB with rich perks and attention that aren’t also flowing to the other ladies.

If rumors of all of this infighting are true, we smell defections that couldn’t be more timely.  We hear Rupert Murdoch is hiring….

A source says reporters including sexy
blonde Melissa Francis, who covers energy, have complained to CNBC suits that
while they get zip, Bartiromo and Burnett are treated like princesses – with
massive promotion, regular gigs on the "Today" show and "NBC
Nightly News," perks such as limos and gushing quotes from network brass in
newspaper articles.

"The catfight that started with Maria
being jealous of Erin’s rise has spread down the line. Now all of the other
female reporters are getting p – - – ed off," our insider said.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is out for blood: CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo’s.  She posed in a Michael Kors wool coat with fox cuffs and they don’t like it (As you can probably guess, that’s not the Kors coat in our ‘fun with Photoshop’ pic):

In More magazine’s September feature on
fashionable female movers and shakers over 40, CNBC’s "Money Honey" is
seen smiling seductively in a skin-tight Celine matte jersey dress and the Kors
coat. She raves: "Chic, sexy clothes are the real me . . . The coat is
spectacular; the fur cuffs give it just the right amount of glamour." PETA
spokesman Michael McGraw fumed to Page Six: "There’s nothing glamorous
about animal electrocution, which is one of the most common methods used to kill
foxes for their pelts. She looks morally bankrupt in that fur. All that time
around the closing bell must be turning her into a real ding-a-ling."
Strangely, Bartiromo’s flack insisted that despite the More article, the
newswoman doesn’t approve of fur, doesn’t own any and that wearing the coat for
the shoot was a "mistake."

That’s what Page Six is suggesting, because Erin’s been getting more TV time as well as publicity recently and that doesn’t sit well with the spotlight loving Bartiromo:

Insiders say Bartiromo is in an uproar over
her ravishing rival Burnett, who’s begun to upstage her at the business news
channel.

An inside source tells Page Six the Money Honey has been fuming that curvy
Burnett, in addition to her duties as anchor of "Street Signs" and
co-anchor of "Squawk on the Street," is getting substantial airtime on
the "Today" show, which gives her a much bigger audience. "Maria
is like, hey, why isn’t it me on the ‘Today’ show? She’s very jealous of all the
attention Erin is getting," our source said.

Citigroup and high flying former wealth management head Todd Thomson have finally agreed to a severance package after his head rolled in January over the well publicized Mariagate scandal:

The terms – which both sides have agreed not to disclose – follow weeks of tough negotiations over the size of Mr Thomson’s settlement and restrictions on poaching staff.

Mr Thomson said he was sacked without cause and the company has never publicly suggested otherwise. However, people familar with the situation said he was sacked partly for conspicuous spending including corporate sponsorship of events involving Maria Bartiromo, the CNBC correspondent.

One person familiar with Citigroup’s negotiation said Mr Thomson “was paid for the time he worked for the company.”

Loose lips: Page Six digs up 80’s dirt on Maria Bartiromo

Posted by WSF On February - 15 - 2007

MariaBartiromo-004

And the hits just keep on coming:  With Maria Bartiromo now under nearly daily assault over her relationship with former Citi exec Todd Thomson, her role in his ouster, and her silence, Page Six has dug up some dirt on the teenage Maria, whose sources say she "was a big-haired, boy-teasing, high-school honey who cheated on her squeeze and nearly caused a Brooklyn gang rumble":

"Maria and I grew up in Dyker Heights. She was the girlfriend of Joey Maria, who ran with the 13th Avenue Boys, a group of toughs that hung on the corner of 13th and 78th," a longtime Page Six source said.

"Joey was a handsome, wiry thing, a very cool kid. Maria [a student at the Catholic all-girl Fontbonne Hall Academy on Shore Road] was a gorgeous thingy whose eyes melted all the guys’ hearts."

Our source, a member of the rival "7th Avenue Boys," said: "Maria was always there on Joey’s arm, all Jordache’d up in heels. She had a great bum, too, but even though she dressed like a hot chick . . . inside she was a real down-to-earth, intelligent sweetheart."

One day in the ’80s, "We were just talking innocently, then started flirting, and then some full-on making out that got to about second base. I was in heaven. She was a great kisser. We thought the concrete handball walls provided cover, but it didn’t – somebody saw us and told Joey . . . Rumors started spreading the 13th Avenue guys were going to come down to kick my ass." .

As the 7th Avenue Boys were boozing and listening to a boom box in the woods of the Dyker Beach Golf Course that night, the 13th Avenue mob showed. "We were surrounded," our source relates. "Joey accused me of making out with Maria. Naturally I told him, ‘You’re [bleeping] crazy.’ It looked like it was going to turn into an all-out brawl when . . . Maria starts yelling at Joey that he’s being stupid, she loves him . . . and would never make out with anyone else, let alone [me] and that she brought her girlfriend along so he could hear it from her…..

Risky Kiss With Money Honey – Page Six New York Post

AlexisGlick-003Watch out CNBC, Fox Business News is set to debut in the fourth quarter of 2007 according to News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch.  And It’s got its own extremely popular ‘money honey’ of its own in Alexis Glick:

"We have long considered the business television market to be underserved," Murdoch said. "Having built Fox News into a cable news leader and a cultural phenomenon against all expectations, I’m confident Roger Ailes can do the same in business news."

Murdoch indicated that Fox Business Channel will follow the FNC template in the way it reflects his philosophical outlook and the way it differentiates itself in tone and attitude.

"It will have a more pro-business stance … CNBC leaps on every scandal. It’s a negative attitude," he said. "I won’t announce too much detail on the programming, because everything we say, CNBC will immediately copy."

"Bring it on," CNBC spokesman Kevin Goldman said. "We welcome the competition, if it ever shows up."

Well maybe CNBC doesn’t leap on every scandal as Fox alleges.  It seemed to go out of its way to selectively not cover Maria Bartiromo’s scandalicious plane rides and her seemingly all-too-cozy-for-a-serious-reporter relationship with now former Citigroup exec Todd Thompson.

We watched Late Late Night Show host Craig Ferguson having a great time roasting CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo in his opening monologue last night over her role in the Citicorp scandal involving her logging frequent flyer miles on their corporate jet. He noted that there’s a rumor that she’s having an affair with a business executive — although he said he didn’t know if that was true.  But then he focused on her "Money Honey" nickname and merchandising ambitions and mused: "If she’s not careful, she’ll be the "Dough Ho"….or the "Bank Skank"….

Maria Bartiromo finally getting her own talk show?

Posted by WSF On January - 30 - 2007

MariaBartiromoDollarSigns-005Talk has resurfaced again that Maria Bartiromo may be getting her own CNBC talk show, even as controversy swirls around her about her journalistic ethics connected with the Citigroup / Todd Thomson affair.  According to the New York Post:

Bartiromo is in talks with the network about launching her own branded TV show, following a format used by people like Charlie Rose and Bill Moyers.

The move coincides with her filing at least eight applications to trademark her Wall Street pet name, the "Money Honey," which sources stressed may not signal the name of a show.

"She’s pitching it to the network," said one source. "There’s no guarantee that if it were ever developed that ‘Money Honey’ would even be a part of it."

The more they avoid the issue, the bigger it’s gonna get:  There’s more heat this morning over CNBC and Maria Bartiromo, and the coverage — or rather, lack thereof — of her relationship with now ousted Citigroup exec Todd Thompson. This time it’s coming from journalism professors — they aren’t liking what they’re seeing and hearing — since CNBC and Maria have just stuck their heads in the sand and have mostly avoided the issue:

“To say these are personnel matters and shouldn’t be talked about publicly would be disingenuous when journalism itself is all about shining the light of scrutiny on powerful people,” said [Bob] Steele [a journalism ethics professor at Poynter Institute]. “It’s essential that she and CNBC address these issues.”

Bartiromo declined to comment on the matter last week in Davos, Switzerland, where she was covering the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. Thomson, 45, hasn’t returned repeated calls to his home in Connecticut

Edward Wasserman, the Knight Professor of journalism at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, said CNBC’s response suggests the company is more interested in Bartiromo’s value as an envoy than her independence.

“I locate the problem with CNBC,” he said. “They have obviously been using her and their other high-profile people as brand-creation devices and encouraging them to cozy up to people in the financial community.”

MariaBartiromo-RonJeremy-MoneyHoney-1990-001

Maria plans to sell herself: According to Page Six which continues to cover Maria Bartiromo’s relationship with former Citigroup wealth management head Todd Thomson, the so-called "Money Honey" is trademarking the term so that she can pocket some cash:

NOT even CNBC anchorbabe Maria Bartiromo’s bosses can say for sure how many flights she took on the Citigroup corporate jet with the bank’s wealth-management chief, Todd Thomson, who was jettisoned last week over his lavish spending.

Bartiromo logged tens of thousands of miles on at least "six trips" on the plane, two sources at the bank told The Post.

Bartiromo, meanwhile, wants to take her "Money Honey" nickname to the bank. She’s trying to trademark her pet name for potential uses ranging from stuffed animals to coloring books. Her lawyer filed on Jan. 16 at least eight applications for use of the moniker, TVNewser reported.

We had to laugh after spotting this: With a little bit of searching, we discovered that she already shares the name with an XXX rated movie from Torrid Video that came out in 1990, starring among others, the ubiquitous (and hairy) porn star wonder Ron Jeremy.  So we had a little fun with Photoshop and gave the original star the boot in favor of the hopeful trademark owner.  Here’s the movie’s "plot":

MarketWatch’s Jon Friedman thinks that CNBC has damaged its credibility by ignoring the story and not covering it.

Has anyone noticed how CNBC has covered The Story?

And you couldn’t blame anybody for smirking.

Actually, they meant: Has anyone noticed how CNBC has NOT covered The Story (smirk, smirk).

This saga goes beyond being titillating gossip. This is news. It encompasses a shake-up at one of America’s most important companies, business and journalism ethics — as well as, ultimately, CNBC’s credibility and image.
Apparently, CNBC’s damage-control strategy is to hope that this unwanted intrusion will play itself out and simply go away. The network may not be so lucky, in this age of blogs.

Anyway, CNBC bills itself as The Worldwide Leader in Business News. Bartiromo is a legitimate TV star. Those two factors alone make the story worthwhile and compel CNBC to report on it.

MariaBartiromoJonathanSteinberg-NYBalletSpringGala-01-20060510While there’s been a lot of salacious tittering and "mile high club" referencing peppering Wall Street conversations about CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo and her role in the dismissal of Citigroup’s wealth management head Todd Thomson, CNBC is coming out in her defense. From the Wall Street Journal:

"Maria Bartiromo … works tirelessly around the world in the service of business journalism," CNBC said in a prepared statement. "In 2006 alone, she made 46 public appearances on behalf of CNBC. Her travel has been company-related and approved, and involved legitimate business assignments. Her record and reporting speak for themselves." CNBC, a business-news channel, is owned by General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal.

CNBC says any trips by Ms. Bartiromo on the Citigroup jet were preapproved and fell under the "source development" section of its code of ethics. The channel considers the matter closed and says it isn’t investigating Ms. Bartiromo’s relationship with Citigroup.

MariaBartiromo-004How do you solve a problem like Maria?:  The Wall Street Journal has more details this morning on Citigroup’s ouster of wealth management head Todd Thomson and his Maria Bartiromo fixation:

Citigroup Inc. Chief Executive Officer Charles O. Prince, moving to cut costs at the global financial giant, was jolted last week by an expense item from a senior executive.

Todd Thomson, chief of Citigroup’s wealth-management unit, had used more than $5 million from his division’s marketing budget to sponsor a new television program for the Sundance Channel, people familiar with the matter say. The program’s hosts were slated to include CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo and actor Robert Redford.

An angry Mr. Prince told Citigroup directors last week that the expense was among a number of lapses of judgment by Mr. Thomson — from improper use of Citigroup’s corporate jet to installing a wood-burning fireplace in his office to spending Citigroup money on functions featuring Ms. Bartiromo, according to a person familiar with the situation. Over the weekend, Mr. Prince forced out Mr. Thomson, 45 years old.

ToddThomsonFormerCitiWealthMgtHead-001This morning’s page Six has a piece on why Todd Thomson is no longer the head of Citigroup’s wealth management group.  According to their sources, he pissed off CEO Chuck Prince over his use of the corporate jet where he’s said to have ferried friends including CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo around:

Sources said that Thomson, whose unit was a financial success story inside the firm, had been warned about his high-flying ways – but that the tipping point came when Bartiromo joined him on the Citi corporate jet between New York and Beijing last year.

A CNBC spokesman later said: "Maria sought and received approval in advance to fly to Asia on Citi’s jet. Billing was handled between CNBC’s corporate parent and Citi."

Bartiromo, reached via e-mail in Davos, Switzerland, said any connection to Thomson’s departure was "flat-out wrong."

Mariabartiromo05_1Those Brits just can’t seem to get enough of CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo.  Last month a smitten interviewer from the Financial Times got her to dish over lunch at San Pietro.  Now she’s interviewed again by another UK publication (although by a woman this time).  We all know from the FT article that she’s a "girls’ girl" who loves her Gucci and Manolos.  In this article she gives us a bit more color — when she travels she reads Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Glamour.  During the business day she reads the Financial Times, WSJ and some of the other NY papers as well as The Drudge Report. She loves old movies with Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren and current movies with Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson.

And did you know that if she weren’t in media that she’s dreamed of being a back-up singer?  The article doesn’t say who she’d like to back up — Tina Turner maybe?  Hopefully she’s got a better singing voice than the awful earful we got the other day from another media personality, Connie Chung….
