In 2003, billionaire money manager Jeffrey Epstein, charged in July with soliciting sex from underage girls, announced that he woud be making a donation to Harvard to fund the work of mathematical biologist Martin A Nowak. Nowak is the director of Harvard’s Program for Evolutionary Dynamics. Epstein wrote a $6.5 million check, and said he’d consider raising that amount to $30 million.
Now, in the wake of the charges, many who have received his donations, including politicians NY AG Eliot Spitzer, NY AG candidate Mark Green and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, are distancing themselves from Epstein and have returned the funds. Not Harvard. They’ll be keeping the money, thank you very much. According to a Harvard spokesman:
"Mr. Epstein’s gift is funding important research using mathematics to study areas such as evolutionary theory, viruses, and cancers,” a Harvard spokesman said yesterday. “The University is not considering returning this gift.”
