Go to jail, go directly to jail:  CNBC reports that the judge will remand Bernie Madoff to custody. There was applause in the courtroom.  Earlier, Madoff addressed the court and apologized for his crimes.  But he tried to distance his family from his crimes. (Ya, like we believe it):

"I am actually grateful for this opportunity to publicly comment about my crimes, for which I am deeply sorry and ashamed," Madoff went on to tell Judge Chin. He said that he started the fraud but that he believed it would be short and he could extricate himself.

"As the years went by, I realized my risk, and this day would inevitably come," he said in a steady voice.

Madoff went on to say, "The victims of my schemes included individuals, charities, pension funds and hedge funds."

Madoff made a distinction between his investment business which was the fraud and the other businesses which he said were legit. "The other businesses were legitimate, profitable …in all respects and those businesses were run by my brother and my sons," said Madoff.
