San Francisco investment banker Bill Hambrecht (founder of Hambrecht & Quist) and his partner, Google senior exec Tim Armstrong are each ponying up $2 million to start a new football league to rival the NFL.  It’ll be called the United Football League.  It’s first owner:  billionaire and Dallas Mavericks’ Mark Cuban.:

The league, still in the early planning
stages, could play as soon as August 2008, Hambrecht told the newspaper.
Hambrecht’s office said he was traveling and not immediately available for
comment.

Hambrecht already has experience with a
former NFL rival. In the early 1980s Hambrecht was a minority partner in the
Oakland Invaders, one of the original franchises in the United States Football
League, which played in the NFL’s off-season. That league disbanded after three
seasons.

Hambrecht told the New York Times the
league could put its teams in cities where the NFL does not play, like Los
Angeles and Las Vegas.
