Dickgrasso001_1Charlie Gasparino in Squawkblog: One of the consequences of the judge in the Elliot Spitzer vs Dick Grasso legal fight moving the trial date forward to September 5 from October 30 is that Grasso can’t use his pitbull attorney Brendan Sullivan.  The expected six week trial coincides with another case that Sullivan is involved in: the third retrial of former Cendant chairman Walter Forbes by the US Attorney’s office in New Jersey.

Colinhalljohnwashington007a The story keeps getting more bizarre: According to several UK papers on Sunday, John Washington, the champagne bottle wielding and still on-the-lam attacker of a banker, is now claiming that he thinks he may have been drugged with a substance like roofies (aka Rohypnol, the date rape drug);  he says he can’t even remember the incident, although his accounts seem to change some from interview to interview.  He’s also claiming that he’s gotten anonymous death threats:  22 of them so far.  And we notice that all of his websites have been taken down.  Also, according to press reports, Washington is way older than we thought.  One report says he’s 32, and another says he’s 43.  Given one news story mentioning that his mother is 80 and his former investment banker dad is 86, we’re guessing that 43 is about right unless mom was nearly 50 when he was born. (Thanks to a reader for the picture of Mr. Washington dressed as his "ancestral relative" George Washington) Note: we had to remove the picture as we were told by our blog host that it violated the terms of their agreement.

And what of his victim?  Lucky for Mr. Washington, it sounds like there’s good news on Colin Hall.  After five days unconscious, he’s awake and said to be improving.

Here’s some of the dramatic coverage from the Sunday UK press:

Colinhalljohnwashington007_1The old ‘I thought it was cranberry juice’ defense: The American Oxford student wanted in the alleged St. Tropez nightclub attack on banker Colin Hall has apparently surfaced according to BBC report, and he wants to give himself up.  John Washington claims to have "absolutely no recollection"  of the incident, where he’s said to have cracked a bottle of champagne over the victim’s head.  His french solicitor has advised him to wait to turn himself in although he says "I have never had a stronger impulse in my life than to tell the police.".   Why do we think this story sounds so fishy?

Bernie Ebbers Conviction upheld by appeals court

    Posted by WSF On July - 28 - 2006

Bernieebbers001Worldcom CEO Bernie Ebbers has failed in his attempt to get his conviction overturned.  His lawyer had argued that Ebbers didn’t get a fair trial because three former Worldcom executives, who the defense believed would give testimony to support Ebbers’ case, weren’t given immunity by the government.

The ruling by the three judge panel of the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals could clear the way for Mr. Ebbers to begin serving a 25-year prison sentence for his actions as head of the onetime telecommunications giant.

    Citigroup raids Lehman bankers

    Posted by WSF On July - 28 - 2006

Citigrouplogo001Citigroup grabbed what sounds like a whole team of bankers from rival Lehman Brothers for it’s New York based financial services group.  Henry Michaels is joining Citi as co-head of diversified financial services.

Michaels will be joined by five other colleagues: John Roddy, a managing director, Jerry Wiant, a director, Sean Burke, a vice president and associates John Minor and Donald Lacey.

Michaels has worked on a number of financial deals, including Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS.L: Quote, Profile, Research) acquisition of U.S. bank Charter One and Washington Mutual’s purchase of Dime Bancorp. He will report to Hamid Biglari, Citigroup’s global head of financial institutions.

Entourage001CNBC’s Joe Kernen may be able to talk about Aquaman’s grosses without having to explain that he’s joking: although there are significant hurdles to overcome and it may still be a longshot, Aquaman the movie might actually get made. Maybe.  Unless they’re joking.

"Aquaman," one of Hollywood’s hottest inside jokes, might make the move from fiction to reality. As a key plot line in HBO’s "Entourage," the "movie" directed by James Cameron shattered box-office records (a feat that got it a real ad in Variety), turned an unknown actor into a $20-million movie star and sparked a fight over a sequel.

But now, informal talks have been launched about the feasibility of making a real Warner Bros. "Aquaman" movie. In one of the strangest twists of this life-imitating-art tale, the talent agent at the center of the informal "Aquaman" talks is Ari Emanuel, the brassy Endeavor partner on whom "Entourage" agent Ari Gold is based.

Good news at Comcast bad news for Vonage?

    Posted by WSF On July - 28 - 2006

Social networking at schools and public libraries may be confined to canoodling in the book aisles if U.S. House of Representatives has anything to say about it.  They voted on Thursday to approve a bill that would make "social networking" sites and "chat rooms" inaccessible to minors.  However, it seems like many other commercial sites like Amazon and Slashdot will also become inaccessible under their broad definition of off-limts websites….

Fsalogo001Former GLG star trader Philippe Jabre withdrew his appeal over the £750,000 fine levied against him by the FSA over alleged insider trading, handing the regulator a rare victory.  Next, he’s likely to be banned from trading in the City.

"Although Mr. Jabre disagrees with the FSA’s decision, he considers he had a fair hearing before the Regulatory Decisions Committee and he accepts its decision," a statement issued by the former GLG Partners manager said.

"All it means is he’s accepted the original decision by the FSA," said Richard Campbell, Mr. Jabre’s spokesman. "That means paying the fine and getting on with his life."

    “Private portraits by Pricasso”

    Posted by WSF On July - 27 - 2006

PricassoThis has nothing to to with the market or investing (although we know how some of you love to pour money into art), but we thought it was hilarious.  This guy paints with his…ahem…. (Note: there is nudity; the short video is 1:51 long):

The star of this year’s annual Sexpo in Sydney is Tim Patch, a.k.a. Pricasso who uses his privates to paint portraits.

It’s that time of year again — when Sydney goes sex-mad.

Patch says there are a lot of extra things he has to consider compared to other artists. For a start, he has to be careful to use only water-soluble acrylic paint and, according to him, positioning is everything.
